So,

Thinking of going to Italy a while. Interested in finding some ways to get around without spending a hefty sum.

Anyone have property for rent? Or possibly been to Italy for a lengthy period and have tips on how to find good places..... do's and dont's... All these types of things?
 
Bad idea.

Italy is the birthplace of open shirts and gold watches. You're going to squander your investment money.

Figure out which region you want to visit and overpay for an airbnb type rental till you can scout locally. Italy has the same tourist traps every country does just do as much research as possible.
 
The best route would be for you to post on the subreddit of the city you'd like to go (ie /r/rome ). The locals there will help you find an apartment (or more specifically, where locals go to find apartments as the English portals are always vacation rentals and marked up). You might be lucky (read: if you try hard enough) and find someone who needs to sublet their places for the time you'll be in country.

Come in the low season (winter). The weather will still be nice as its the Mediterranean but prices would be lower. The sights would be less crowded too (but the traffic will still be there...).

Also, pro tip: you can save .50 EUR at the cafe if you ask to have your coffee to-go and just stand there and drink it. They charge about 50 cents to sit down at the cafe in Italy.

Yeah i see AirBNB rentals are WAYYY overpriced. $150 a day like it's a quality hotel.

I've seen better prices on TripAdvisor and FlipKey
 
Italy is a small big country and has loads of diversity.
Regarding budget : it depends.
And mostly according to where you go (the farther south, the cheaper, but it's generally affordable in rural areas).
I hope you're driving, public transport is hell/non-existent (also fun to drive around the country).
Also use Waze for speed cameras (compared to UK, they're more pretty much everywhere).

Source: lived there till 18, spent 2015 traveling around the north (I'm from the south).
Did I mention the south is best? I'm obviously biased.

I can't wait to see these things. LOL I've heard public transportation is pretty much non-caring about the schedule.

Torrino, Milan, or Venice. Prices are pretty high as you said from what I see on rental sites but if you find somebody local it is much lower, correct?

North of Italy means hefty european city prices.
You are also going for the most expensive cities (Milan and Venice, with Turin being just ok).
Milan it's definitely going to be no London (price-wise), but I guess it'd be as expensive as visiting UK cities. Venice... I don't know... Have you seen the prices of real estate around that area :wink: ?
I guess it would pay off to stay overnight outside venice (still : if you're driving)


Use the viamichelin app, so you get to see the costs of motorways : you can save a ton of money by avoiding the two super expensive private motorways that have been built in recent years in the NorthEast (so between Milan and Venice :D ).
 
I've been reading. Italy has a crazy crisis .
Everything costs a lot but jobs dont' even pay that much.
People are living check to check..... for the grand majority
