Best ROI for a small blog - Where to invest?

So I've been working hard on content and outreach but have been keeping most/all of the revenue for myself to pay dem bills. I can do a lot of the writing and marketing without outsourcing, and for that reason haven't spent much on anything except the odd PBN link back in the day or Facebook ads.

I'd like to start reinvesting back into my sites and would love to hear what people think are the best places to do so with a limited budget (lets say $500 a month).

What are your experiences with reinvesting and what are the first/most vital places you'd reinvest to see the most impact?

My intuitions say either content writing (that takes up the majority of my time) so I can focus more on outreach and getting backlinks, or trying out some of the services in the marketplace here on BuSo. Maybe pay for some subscription services (SEMrush etc) that can help me ion the day to day?

If you have a good amount of content on your site, I would focus more on promotion. If there are some gaps in the content, I would first get that filled and then do outreach or invest money in the high authority links
 
What would you consider a good amount of content? I'm nearing 100 articles on this site.

Thinking maybe to try some services for high authority backlinks then.
 
My opinion is formed around the assumption that you're operating what is already or is meant to be an authority site of the white hat variety. One of the fundamental aspects of that for me is a constant stream of content, and that takes up a lot of time.

I would recommend outsourcing your big, in-depth posts. I'd get those out there and ranking. I'd order as many as I could and schedule them to drip out. If I could do the same with shorter, more casual news/blog posts, I would. Otherwise I'd do those myself since they're faster. I'd use them to fill in gaps and schedule them too.

The main reason behind this thinking is that without content, there's nothing to do on-page or off-page SEO to, and there's nothing to rank. The secondary reason is that this will free up your time to be collecting links and social signals to help rank. The tertiary reason is that each page generates page rank and it can be interlinked to push it where I want it, along with whatever trust your domain receives after a certain point of indexing of high quality content.

Yeah, I'm still quite new to this game but I'm starting to see that (at least for the kinds of sites I'm working on) content should really be the main focus. And a lot of it.
