In a world of clickbait and nonsense, Grantland was actually a pretty decent site with some talented people working there.

That's probably why they weren't able to keep up. Good people are expensive and authentic titles don't get nearly as many clicks.

"We have decided to direct our time and energy going forward to projects that we believe will have a broader and more significant impact," ESPN said about Grantland on Friday.

Weird..

301,000 Searches a month for the brand.
2.3 Million organic search traffic per month. (Estimated)

In another light, it's a smart move. Fire everyone working on the site, and you gain a solid income stream with no upkeep needed.

I agree though, competing in a clickbait world is tough.

Plus it must have been a struggle too with sports for content topics. How many people want to hear about games/players from years and years ago. The younger crowd is not going to be able to relate.

This is a trend... Sites with good, serious quality content are just disappearing.

We're officially hurtling toward a world where the web is repeating what's already happened with physical news outlets at the turn of the 20th century...

The ethical question doesn't even exist because nobody cares so long as they get paid.
