Hey guys,

I'm traveling to NYC in a month or so to open up a bank account for my new business, so I wanted to 'equip' myself with a solid to-do list from people living there/spending a lot of time in the city.

Where to stay (7 days), where to eat, what to see, etc. ?

A couple of notes:
  • wife's coming with me
  • we love jazz, 20's - 60's
  • love street food, but also love to dine in fancy restaurants
  • walking is not an issue
  • would love to visit New Orleans, but not sure if it's doable on a 7-day trip.
Thanks!

There's an Argentinian steakhouse around e 84th street... their food is TO DIE for .....

I think the name is "Libertador " or something similiar

Don't leave NYC without having some Junior's cheesecake

And street meat in NYC is great.

Anyone know if they still do the freshmarkets in SOHO on Sundays still?

Oh man. I can list so much for you to do.

First off - don't try to go to New Orleans, too. There's too much to do in both cities alone for a 7 day trip. If you want to get out of Manhattan, you can venture into Brooklyn (hipsters, music, bars, Barclays) and Queens (food, food, food, food).

Also - unless you're dying to see them - avoid the big tourist traps like the empire state building, statue of liberty, times square, etc. They're cool to see for about 30 seconds until you realize the entire surrounding area is built to extract money from tourists.

Here's a few of my suggestions:

NYC Restaurants / Bars / Cocktail Lounges

  1. Nomad Hotel
  2. Blue Ribbon (Any of them. Izakaya is my fav)
  3. Mother of Pearl
  4. Dead Rabbit NYC
  5. Tiny's & the Bar Upstairs
  6. Blacktail
  7. Bombay Bread Bar
  8. Grammercy Tavern
  9. Katz Deli
  10. Marta (best pizza you'll ever have)
  11. Momofuku (any of them)
  12. Bar Goto (get the wings and the celery)
  13. DeStefano's Steakhouse (brooklyn)
  14. ...and Lower East Side NYC for plenty of dive bars and partying.

Those are my fav's. Can also browse https://ny.eater.com for more.

Things To Do
  1. Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)
  2. Guggenheim
  3. Museum of Sex
  4. Beer Garden @ The Standard
  5. The Highline
  6. Any event at Madison Square Garden
  7. Rainbow Room
  8. South St. Seaport (https://www.seaportdistrict.nyc/things-to-do/thing-to-do.html)
  9. Chlsea Piers (https://www.chelseapiers.com/)
  10. Walk St. Marks St.
  11. Walk around Tribeca, Easy Village, Greenwich Village, SoHo, etc. (don't try to walk more than two neighborhoods per day. you'll get burned out)
  12. Concerts at Iriving Plaza, Grammercy, Webster Hall, and Bowery Ballroom
  13. ComedyCellar (https://www.comedycellar.com/)

Wow man! Thanks for taking the time to write that down. Copy pasting that to my phone and will definitely try to check out all those places.

  1. The Museum Of Sex is not what you expect it to be. It's decent, but not particularly interesting imo. It's neat if you have an hour or two.
  2. Be sure to check out the Met, it's my personal favourite museum.

Use Agoda if you are deadset on staying in hotels. There are some solid deals available everyday but they go fast. Staying in LES is a good way to allow yourself to see both manhattan, as well as the other boroughs.

If its not possible/a bit out of your budget, Greenpoint/Williamsburg area is a great place that can access almost any worth visiting part of new york in under 45 minutes via metro. A private room Airbnb there ensures a nice stay and usually good proximity to a metro unless otherwise said.

Also rule of thumb, late night, trains don't run on schedule. They do whatever the fuck they want. And if you see a train car that has noone on it late night, DO NOT GET ON. Those are called poop trains. It's where the homeless shit and sleep. One time, I and another guy got on both unsuspecting thinking we just lucked out on an empty cart. The smell as the door closed and sealed us in literally almost knocked me out.

Also checkout Chelsea Market for food, but a good rule to stick by is just try and hit all the places Bourdain recommended. I did it, and was mindblown.

Lastly, be sure to stop at a deli and get a hero. Some of the best goddamn sandwhiches on the planet for cheap and everybody eats it.

THIS.

If you're going to Brooklyn, this is especially true for the G and L lines pretty much all day long. Expect them to be late and take forever so you can plan accordingly!

Of course, an Uber trip is an option too. Can get a tad bit expensive, though.
