What is the best hit counter for a website?

I once looked at this to add a hit counter to a PBN site, which was an old flat file site so I felt it was appropriate.

There are still some relics out there that will get the job done, but most require using their server side code and will force you to give a backlink back to them.

What I ended up doing was coding one out of PHP. A google search or two and viola, your own custom hit counter.

Try Statcounter, they have a feature that allows you to show the amount of visits on the front end. It's a full site tracking tool, I use it for spammier sites.

Do you want a hit counter that visitors to your site can see, or do you want it kept private so that only you can see it? If it's the second one, check out Clicky, Google Analytics, etc.
