How does BuilderSociety have so many links according to Moz?

Because I created a free, speed optimized theme called BuSo Lightning that got used a bunch by people spinning content and creating massive crappy doorway page sites. And in the footer was a nofollow (thankfully) link back to BuilderSociety.

I also saw some incredible sites that used it the way it was intended. Was a fun time.
 
669 referring domains. for all those backlinks I have still not figured out why people track backlinks instead of referring domains. I see people refer to backlinks all the time. A site-wide link in one referring domain can give you millions of backlinks.

Am I missing something?
 
The interesting part is if people did NOT remove the BuSo backlink then anyone with access to these backlink checkers can find sites using BuSo Lightning. That's why you are suppose to remove as many footprints as possible - if you're trying to hide from internet ghosts..., if you believe in that sort of thing.
