Is PR distribution service an effective linkbuilding strategy?

Howdy friends!
I came across couple of companies that promise to distribute my press release about anything to top news sites where the rest of the sites get their "news" from for around $350. Is this service an effective method of link building and do those links carry any weight in the eyes of big G ? They don't disclose the list of sites where they will post so I can't really see the DR in any of the research services. Wanted to hear some opinions, please.

What you get with press releases for the most part is the same article syndicated to a bunch of sites that are full of syndicated articles where all the links are nofollow and the articles get deleted after 3 months. Google's not even going to index most of it. I wouldn't spend my money on it.

@Ryuzaki Thank you for your insight. I was looking upclose at the backlinks of my competitors in the area and that's how I found that service. Come to think about it you are correct about G not indexing most of the backlinks. They only had maybe 10-12 links from pr sites. Cheers!

I heard someone say this SpinePR was decent in some discord group.

But slightly off-topic question. Do you agree with that video? I mean this guy is soo bs, he bought an expired domain with relevant links and he has completely garbage articles yet he's ranking on google. No headings, no images, 1940s website. I remember in his old videos he claimed that the crappier/simpler the website the better it converts. I mean if that was the case why would nerdwallet and wirecutter themes look more modern. There's no way this website should last tbh. Even my 700 article (like 300-400 now) was better than this, at least it had a proper featured image with headings.

But he's getting 500 traffic on semrush so probably like 1k traffic or more.
