KPIs - What are you tracking/benchmarking?

Hello,

I am currently reworking my google sheet with my current KPIs and I was wondering what are you using for tracking your progress of your projects.

I am currently tracking - on a weekly basis - 3 categories of KPIs:
  1. Site-wide: Overall Traffic, Sessions, Users, Bounce Rate etc.
  2. Per Page: Speed, Time a user spend on the page, traffic per page etc
  3. Monetization: Event-Tracking for each page, if redirected to f.ex. amazon, Initial cost of each page, "Estimate if the page is profitable" etc.
Benchmarks are basically set for overall traffic and monetization(I try to make every page that got produced profitable),

Are you tracking something different? Would you add anything?
 
The most important one - Revenue. Should be using amazon tracking IDs / affiliate campaign IDs to figure out how much each segment is generating in terms of revenue (Tracking ID for revenue).

There are two levels to what I focus on: Business and Website.

Business

Business tracking is basically revenue and profit. As longs as I keep growing my revenue, then I'm doing something right and I don't nitpick on website KPIs. I primarily focus on year-to-year revenue in total and pr. site. As long as I made more money this month than the same month last year, I feel I am on the right track.

Website

I have multiple websites with many pages, so tracking all kinds of website traffic is not really possible all the time. I'm really working at how to effectively combine business tracking with website tracking.

The best overall KPI that I have to manage multiple sites is rankings in Google, since it is a proxy for website traffic and I get like 90% organic traffic.

My second KPI is revenue pr. page. I use this to track growth decline across many pages. If my earnings go down more than 20% on a pr. month average over a 3 month average to all time performance, then I go look at that page in detail. I might find issues there, products gone, links not working, outdated design etc. That's my primary method currently to effectively manage hundreds of pages. I also know exactly which pages earn the most revenue, which I make sure to focus on once a week.

Thx for your reply @CCarter. I am currently using a proxy to identify how much a page is making - using event tracking - as amz only allows up to 100 tracking ids, and I am using my amazon account for all my other affiliate sites also.

Is there a better way? I also was looking into the solution of using sth. like thirstyaffiliates to track clicks for each page.

How are you tracking this? Is this on a weekly, monthly basis? Are you using tracking ids?

I have zero clue about being an Amazon affiliate, I only know affiliate promotion from the other side as I have an affiliate program at SW. If they have a limit of 100 tracking IDs, I would then segment your content by categories to group them together within the tracking ID. That's as much advice as I can give regarding the Amazon scenario.
 
I think you can get too carried away with KPIs. Keep it simple.

Average Revenue per visitor & Average Visitors per page published and that is almost it.

You can break these out and customize depending on your unique models, ie. affiliate monetization vs display ad monetization vs product sales vs lead gen etc.

But I don't get too carried away outside of that. You can start getting in the weeds with analytics and it is mostly a time suck.
