So, while print journalism is dying, these guys have perfected the techniques for ages.
Worth a look.
Offline research
This works for ANY niche you are getting into.
Go to the biggest news seller / bookstore you can find and plunk down in front of the rack with the niche of choice (sports, celebs, whatever). Take a good look.
The yellow press is great for this.
Just yesterday, I saw this on the front page (roughly translated):
"Again! Two dead in islamist attack!"
Only on the inside of the paper it was revealed that it was the attackers that died.
Another gem is this publication:
The "photography" magazine is doing this for years.
Now, in Europe, boobs on a cover are not that big of a deal. Still, this sits right in the non-boobs area of tech, hobby, etc..
Does that make it stand out?
You bet.
Does that make every news agent put it in front?
You bet.
By the way:
Apart from the obligatory article on taking nudes or famous nude photographer, this is a very dry, techy, standard camera/photo magazine.
Another good idea is to follow ONE magazine to see what they put on the cover.
This way, you get insight on the repeating themes / big topics.
For some, you can do this online.

- Which magazines stand out? Why? (Color, front picture, placement,...)
- What headlines are used?
- Which ones repeat?
- Is there a formula?
