I have a site with 2,000+ crawlable pages.

80% of my pages are 4 clicks deep or more.

Assuming this is hurting SEO - eating up crawl budget - what would you builders recommend doing to reduce depth?

I have a traditional silo set up

mainsite.com/category/post-title

Because I have 700+ pages of actual content some old posts are getting buried and I suspect not ranking as they should.

Any thoughts guys?

Increase the size of your main category pages, add more links down to the main supports as well as sub-supports, and cross link like hell.

Suspected as much although thought that it would have been more complicated than that lol

Make sure you have a sitemap, link to it with the proper format in your robots.txt, and register it with Webmaster Tools.

Code:
Sitemap: http://site.com/sitemap.xml

Crawling won't be an issue then. Juice flow will be but interlink when it makes sense and push it to the money pages. All 2,000 can't be money pages... Use the lesser pages to pump the earners and let the sitemap handle the crawling.
