I have a small site that I haven’t done much on. I was thinking about trying to rank it. I heard that google makes it impossible to rank payday loan sites, any input

Google makes it impossible for all niches. No new competitors allowed. Ever. For anything.

It's just another niche that has been raped, manhandled, gang banged, and left standing naked in the cold by a bunch of horny wannabe SEOs. The guys that are killing it there are/were next level.

The churn in that niche is ridiculous and is manually reviewed. And when one wipe is done, these guys already have generations of sites ready to rise and take the old one's places. Get in line, basically.

This. It used to be sort of a mythological success indicator niche, the "cool" factor, like "hey these links rank payday!" or "hey these guy are all serious thugs they rank for payday". In a way it was a great way to distract newbies from other fields as it looks now

I might be wrong, but it's just something I noticed when went 'in' and ranked for "cash advance loans" for a while about a year ago. Monetizing these leads is nothing like swimming in gold - unless you have a real lender connection or something similar you'll be getting just a couple of bucks per lead from most payday networks. At the same time leads get rejected like crazy, those payday seekers are all in debt, have low scores, zero money, it's ugly.

If you are just looking to "explore" and "try" - it's not worth it. There's better and easier money almost anywhere else. If, on the other hand, you have a serious monetization channel or are a hardcore spammer pulling strings of hundreds domains and subdomains and redirects and what not - you don't need any advice
