Process Recommendations for New Sites

Hi All,

I have had some ideas for a while and struggle sometimes getting them going.

If I am feeling mega-motivated and decide to work on something, I get caught up in the small details - theme selection, layout, design etc. I guess I am a bit of a perfectionist, even though it is largely unecessary at first. Need to try and just get something out there.

Do you guys have any recommendations for starting a project? What process do you use to create a good solid foundation to build off?

One thing I try to always get right initially is the navigation or site sections. Planning what I want on the site and the layout.

Any recommendations would be great.

Get traffic first, make it pretty later.

The name of the game is for a website to generate traffic, which, in turn, generates revenue (unless it's a for-fun type of project). Having said that, understand that a website will not rank on how it looks. Get over the 'how it looks' mindset right away.

As far as navigation and site sections, you will want to make sure you lay this foundation correctly. I always recommend Bruce for site structure. Read and truly learn that page, and you'll get a good idea of how your content needs to interconnect.

Get content going. If you can't get through content, pay for it. Either way, you're going to need some kind of consumable content for your visitors.

Collect emails, if it fits. Other than content and basic outreach, the only other thing I'd start with right away is building a list. Depending on the niche, email lists are more valuable than anything else.

Once you have traffic and begin to monetize, you can play around with how things look.

Here's a quick outline off the top of my head:

• Brainstorming niche / site ideas
• Keyword research
• Competitive analysis
• Place keywords into groups
• Assign groups to articles
• Map articles out based on the silos you're making
• Buy your domain and host
• Set up wordpress
• Get a logo
• Add a theme and get it set up how you want
• Add plugins
• Set up navigation, menus, widgets, and footer stuff
• Start adding silo head content and main "pillar" content
• Start Link building
• Add secondary content
• Build links
• Watch porn
• Add more content
• Build more links.
• Etc

Start with market research. You want a site that solves a need of your target audience.

After I've researched and chosen my target market and audience, I use a mindmap to create a basic site layout and linking strategy.

After that, it's just a matter of setting the site up.

Definitely don't let yourself get caught up in the little details in the beginning. Just slap up something that is good enough and focus on getting traffic to your sites/offers.
