Rankings Bouncing from 1st Page to Much Further Back

I have a ton of keywords that just stop and start ranking from day to day. They can be anywhere from the 1st page to much further back. These aren't just low volume keywords either. I think it might be some issue with the site rather than a google indexing issue - does anyone have any pointers of where I can start to investigate the cause?

How long has the content / site been up? It could be a case of early site pogo-sticking as google figures out where it wants to place you
 
What is your backlink profile like? If you have access to Ahrefs or Moz, what is your DR or DA score?
 
It could be because Google changes the intent of the search phrase frequently.

If so, you are ranking for one intent, say informational, but doesn't rank for another, say commercial.

I wouldn’t say it’s that because these keywords are pretty specific in their intent
 
I have this problem as well and posted about it here a few months back.

I rank #1 for a keyword for a week and then BOOM, gone. Then come back to #1 in a few days. I can understand google moving me up or down 2-5 positions to test, but this is clearly something else.

I used to fix this with the request manual indexing button which would fix it within minutes so that proves it is an indexing issue. But now that button is also gone from GSC.
