Reddit Backlinks?

So I've got some questions/ideas on using Reddit that I want some more knowledgeable people to poke some holes in.

If you create your own subreddit, what is to stop you from using it to post content with links to your site?

Would these backlinks have no value because it's an empty subreddit? Because they are nofollow? Would they just get reported/deleted even though it's your own subreddit?

It seems like this would be an easy way to get links within highly relevant content on a high DR site, but it doesn't seem anyone does this so what am I missing?

Nothing at all. What people used to do is create their own sub-reddit and then give themselves a sitewide link in the sidebar. The problem now is Google crawls and indexes their new crappy redesign that doesn't have the sidebar.

Would these backlinks have no value because it's an empty subreddit? Because they are nofollow? Would they just get reported/deleted even though it's your own subreddit?

The other thing people used to do was they'd then go into older threads but not ones that were still being actively monitored, and they'd drop links to their own sub-reddit to help flow internal page rank to it to juice it up. I'd imagine this still works.

But as far as submitting your own links, they'll remain nofollow until they get enough upvotes, so you'd need to manipulate that to a degree if you didn't get enough real traction in the sub-reddit. If they did get reported, they'd get reported to you as the moderator.

Otherwise it'd take an administrator to do something about it. You'd have to draw a lot of attention and be doing something very unsavory. But tons of brands have their own subs and only post their own links. I think it's fine if you don't get crazy with the manipulation of the votes.

Reasons I can think of would be that you can just as easily drop links to your site in comments in threads, as a reply to the top comment later. You can do crap like earn the highest comment in the thread by posting early and being witty or saying what you know the hive mind wants to hear, then later edit the comment to include a link to your site.

Otherwise, getting the links happens during regular promotion anyways. If you try to get traffic from a big sub-reddit and even if it fails and only gets 100 upvotes instead of 10,000, you're still getting a dofollow link. Over time you'll accumulate a lot of them and others will start posting your site for you, etc.

It’s policed way better than you would initially think.

They have a lot of really creepy volunteers. You have to not piss any of them off.

My experience is that you will do way better just doing brand mentions in other users threads rather than link drops. Even if the initial exposure is small a lot of rehashers and clout chasers get their ideas from the comments threads. You do need to be somewhat on top of things. Early comments in threads are the only thing of value for getting visibility. They have a huge happening audience that dwarfs the tail traffic.

Building a subreddit is a bit of a slog.
Haven’t gotten much value other than having a place to announce outages or updates.

Weird item of note.
If you do good on reddit advice threads you will naturally spread to Quora and vice versa.
Sometimes it’s easier to seed Quora and watch the round uppers spread you to reddit. It’s a lot easier to get stuff to stock their in some niches.

Reddit is the sites where MANY OF THE SEMI-MAJOR and even major websites find their news 'tip-offs' daily .

As said above, a lot of poeple contribute here and want to be the first to say something important to get their karma. Unknowingly, they are the new age reporter.

If you make front page of reddit (which is a serious battle), it can be worth millions of dollars in revenue if it's all orchestrated properly.

Alternatively, as someone who's hit #1 multiple times, if you're doing this with display ads and affiliate sales, you'll find that Reddit traffic is pretty poor this type of thing because they're not hot targeted traffic. They're goofy users relaxing on their phones on the couch with Netflix in the background. Many have ad blockers or don't really read and scroll and linger on the page. If you drop an Amazon cookie you're going to see the most deranged and perverted purchases pouring through, as well as socks, undies, snacks, and other cheap stuff.

On the flip side, if you're selling a unique product or service (let me paint your dog up as a Baroque era guy eating dinner) you might make a nice mint.

The thing with front-paging Reddit, let alone hitting #1, is that it won't be with "The 10 Best Financial Investment Vehicles for 2021". It'll be with "Quirky Factoid with a Classy Title I Crafted to Hook But Entice a Click to Reveal the Clickbait", etc.

So it sounds like what I'm saying *does* work and should be a part of any basic backlink strategy with of course much more potential if done in other ways.

I like the idea of making top comments and editing to backlinks later. But as someone mentioned my experience is Reddit is just full of people on the lookout for anyone that might be doing anything SEO-related and hunting them down and messing with them like they get paid to do it or something.

Had no clue that links go from nofollow to dofollow based on upvote count.

Getting tips on hot stories is great on Reddit. I owned part of a news company that used Reddit as pretty much the sole source to get breaking news and then post it on large FB pages and it worked pretty great for that back in the day.

I'd really be curious to see any kind of examples where a post hit the top 3 and resulted in millions of revenue for anyone. The ones I've seen would be with someone who makes a game people love and a gameplay video gets up there or when a small business that makes fairly custom high-quality items hits the front they get a ton of orders, not millions in revenue by a long shot though. Maybe the boost they need to get to the millions level in the future with repeat orders and further word of mouth spread though. Oh and also a few YouTube channels that have hit the top that also was the start they needed to get to those millions level.

Could maybe make a million getting a post to the front page of something like penny stocks if you take a big position and then make a post that convinces a bunch of others it's a great stock to buy. Or it crypto as well ect.

You’re thinking about it wrong. Top posts don’t make millions unless you’re into herding rubes off cliffs to make money via counter party risk or other weird trading tricks.
The gaming traffic is incredibly not valuable. Nothing blows up because of reddit. It just spreads a little faster a little sooner and gets over attributed to reddit.

Reddit is powerful as an exposure platform where you can rack up multiple touch points with an audience over time.

It can also be really good for social proofing your conversion funnel. A huge set of keywords in their own right are “branded item or service” reddit.

People trust reddit reviews because the sites negativity is viewed as more honest than positivity circle jerk platforms.

Also I can’t emphasize enough.
You can’t plan on consistently doing well. The mod Cabals and side chat manic obsessive control freaks will nuke you because you’re taking to much of what they view to be their turf.
They’re making money. You can’t just roll up and start soaking up a ton of value off the network effects and expect them not to react. They do, and often in the most shady low down ways you can possibly imagine.

If you get on front page.... in news.......... the right way..... the ROI is LONG-FELT......... immediate returns are excellent, but the long-term effects are unrivaled by most things I've tried/invested in.

Sensational writing is a must to me.

People using generic writers who don't understand the culture = wasting their time

I just got a 'test' done and 4k views off one channel, one pump. This influenced YouTube algorithem and lifted the other videos in search but you have to be consistent all around the board.

Flighted campaigns of 'reddit mobbing' as I call it , seem to be something that can create a decent income stream in less than 6 months. Less than 4 months if you have consistency with quality content.
