Pingbacks are absolutely gross! It's going to force you to give a reciprocal link to any page that links to you. The advantage you have is that they're linking to you and you're not linking back, which creates a hierarchy and preserves page rank on your side.

It's just like rap beef. Some underdog will start dissing a bigger name, and if the bigger name responds (approves the pingback) then it elevates the underdog. If the big name ignores it, the underdog looks stupid for the time being but never really suffers any reputational issues. But by ignoring it the big name ends up getting a boost.
 
I mean yeah, I never approve them in typical situations, but in the case of niche edits I wasn't sure if there was another angle (getting them indexed faster). Warnings heeded and all pingbacks deleted!

If the site is worth a damn, Google is constantly crawling it and will find the link quickly.
