Keyword Research Updated [2021]
The way I do keyword selection !!!!

✅ Top 10 competitor Website Average DR 30 (according to Ahrefs)

✅ Top 5 has social sites and forum sites or at least 2/3 of the top 10 is a social site or forum site.

✅ have they targeted the exact keyword title and URLs in the Top 10?

✅ To see the top 10 competitor content lengths and see if the content can be better than that.

✅ I see the trend of how keyword searches are from Google Trends (whether it's seasonal)

✅ The index page in the Top 10 is below 500 (the index page must be targeted by that keyword) less the index page, is the better for picking that keyword.

"Check these conditions before picking the keyword. "

1) Some of the websites do not match the "Search Intent/Keyword" exit or the full match among those who are top-ten?
2) Can I backlink quality even from top-ten?
3) Is the DR of my website equal or more than the competitor?
3) Is your website equal to or more on the competitor in terms of the topical authority?

If most of the conditions below are yes, you close your eyes and take the keyword. But the first 2 for a very fresh website are only to meet the conditions.

I would add in the conditions that I do a thorough reading of the first 3-5 articles. Are they short? are they properly formated and with proper grammar? Would I be able to bring additional value through my content or I have something that I don't agree with which I could leverage so viewers see my article as more interesting once I hit higher rankings?

Already said that point. I agreed with you. If I saw the content length and info are not good enough I would like to pick that keyword. That's one of the conditions/ rules I have also followed. Is there anything else I have to improve in my keyword research? Please leave your opinion.

How about if the content seems outdated or older than it should for information that changes from time to time?

First check document volume "keyword here in most indexes" for your words.
You can also check sub word volume. "keyword" "here" "in" "most" "indexes" but the datas harder to get value out of if you're not a total spread sheet jockey.

Link counts and domain link counts are only relevant if you have topicality.
"keywords like this" without 1000s of results are brain dead easy.
Its just questionable whether there is volume or not.
Also googles been getting coy with document volume metrics lately.

If they're not in autocomplete they're generally not worth targeting.

For competitive niches check the volume of content created over time.
Decide if you think you can compete.
You might write great content but if someone smarts hitting every keyword in the niche 5 times a week you're gonna struggle not to drown.

Yes, I agreed. But I already wrote that point. If you read my thread you were found that the index page. The index page indicates that how much authority a site belongs.

If you updated older content with information that's really good for ranking.

What would you say the Top 10 competitor Website Average DR (according to Ahrefs) should be?

I said top 10 competitors average DR 30 (according to Ahrefs) its mean you have to calculate top 10 DR then divided by 10 the given number is average of DR which should be 30 or below 30.
