Viral News Site themes and plugins

I want to do an experiment over a half year or so running a viral news site, do you know of any good Wordpress themes or plugins set up ready to go?

Something really, really light weight with minimal requests. The ads are going to really slow things down and add tons of requests, so it's a good idea to have a tiny footprint before adding all that. Little performance issues that you may never even notice with a bloated theme getting 1000 visitors a day are going to kill ya when you're at a few thousand visitors real time.
