Hi,

If I owned the equivalent of signs.com and maids.com what would be the best way to monetize these?

signs.com
  • I thought about drop shipping custom signs by partnering with print shops.
  • I am not really sure how to go about this, nor what the pricing structure would look like.

maids.com
  • Looking at creating a directory for cleaning services.
  • Also not really sure how to go about this, nor what the pricing structure would look like.

I tried and failed to create a directory for services companies like HVAC, electricians, and plumbers but found that these companies often get their 90% of their customers through referral.

Looking to try something again. I am running out of capital to try things so any advice and wisdom would be appreciated.

I just don't think having domains like that means anything. Don't base your business off of "I have this domain so I gotta do this!"

As a performance marketer I've directly been involved in testing some big-time domains worth 7-figures in terms of "what does this actually do for a business besides give marketers a boner?" and based on my findings it wasn't much. Normal consumers don't care about URLs like marketers think they do.

There was a time these domains could rank easier for stuff in Google and had value. That's gone. The whole notion of thinking a consumer sees "wow maids.com what a domain!!! Such authority wow I'm gonna convert now!" is just not true. I'd work on trying to sell your domains to the next guy still living in 2010.

If it were me, I would...

1. List out 50 business ideas for each domain
2. Pick the top three for each site
3. Spend a week chasing down those ideas and poking holes in them
4. Pick the best idea for each site
5. Compare the two and get real granular about what the opportunity and timelines will look like for each
6. Pick the one that makes the most sense to you (meaning you've chosen a domain)
7. Sell the other domain to finance the startup in your new business venture
8. Put all of your energy into building out that business for six months

If you don't have any other options, and you've sold the other domain, you'll probably find a way to make it work.

Respectfully I disagree.

I've seen firsthand the power of a great domain name.

Something I've seen people with these 4L (four letter) and 5L domains that are not only pronounceable but are actual dictionary words, is to lease them to someone else. Whether that's lease-to-own or just straight up monthly or annual rent, it's an option, especially if they start really growing their business and all their marketing materials and branding begins to depend upon the domain name.

I think my most feasible idea is for signs.com

1. Create a website for custom signs
2. Do lead-gen/SEO and partner with local print shops to drop ship the prints
3. Pricing wise I would take a 10-20% cut

Does this plan make sense at all?

Domains of that quality raise your conversion rates AND raise your ad click through in some contexts.
They're super duper valuable for ecommerce and service lead gen.
I've built out few sales funnels for old wf members in services spaces and they're absolutely killer.

Recruiter runs his recruiting business on Keyword + Jobs .com.

Never done any advertising. He's gotten leads from type-ins for years and made millions in recruiting fees.

Only advertises jobs he recruits for.

The domain was expensive upfront even years ago. It's easily paid for itself.
