Hi BS,

Currently doing some research on adult niches. I'm curious as to what you guys think about affiliate marketing/advertising through adult niche sites. It seems like there's a ton of traffic around, yet the rankings aren't as competitive (do people not have the balls to pursue adult sites?) and in some scenarios is almost non-existent.

Would love to have your thoughts on the pros/cons of adult niches.

Cal.

I think you're mistaken about this. Adult has historically been at the cutting edge of SEO, and I haven't heard anything to suggest that the situation has changed lately. I know a couple of people who do adult affiliate, and from what they tell me, it sounds as though it's still a competitive space.

What you might want to consider is whether you can monetize adult traffic to promote a non-adult offer, since the inventory tends to be very cheap. See Eat24's case study well-known, for instance.

Too much supply = very little profits for affiliate marketers. Do research on the biggest pains of adult network, and you'll realize it's pretty difficult to convert users cause there is just unlimited free supply - over-saturation. One reason the adult industry has to constantly be on the forefront of innovation - web wise, and marketing wise. The stuff you see in the adult right now, is going to arrive mainstream in about 2-3 years from now. I've written about this in the past several times - some marketing schemes that originated from adult:

Popups - adult first.
Interstitial Ads - adult first.
Ads on Videos when Video Paused - adult first.
Video = adult first.

Those 3 aren't even doing it justice, there are literally dozens upon dozens of web innovations which originated from adult - even online video went mainstream in adult before there was a Youtube. That's the one place where innovation is paramount since there is just so much saturation. Study adult and their web marketing tactics and try to translate that over to a lesser competitive niche and you'll be at the forefront of your niche.

Thanks for the feedback mate. I will certainly be looking into this, a pair of tits seem to provoke great innovations.

Hi Minderwinter, my niche is of the adult category however is not in the distribution of videos/pornographic content. I think that this niche specifically may be somewhat a one-off, I'm seeing monthly search numbers in the tens of thousands, with low-authority sites at the top positions with no more than 50 ref domains. I will certainly look into Eat24's case study, thanks for pointing it out!

Ranking for adult niches is a pain. I used to drive traffic through Omegle and the traffic converted very low. If you don't have a huge budget, it really isn't something you can just jump and blend into.

Carter said a lot of things and all I heard was that I can write off porn subs as a business expense.

Hmmm...

Intradasting things happening in porn SEO/marketing.
CCarter is right when he said to study porn sites for the techniques they use.

Eli of bluehatseo also touched on this a few years back:
Float like a porn site, sting like a sales page

As for actually going into porn, loads of people do it with moderate success.. this is not the forum for this, tho.

Check http://www.iq69.com (forum) and http://profitarmy.com/ (blog) for pointers.
People also send interested newbs to gfy.com (forum), but I found that nothing but abrasive.

As for adult... I think if you are not actually trying to monetize porn pictures or movies, but something related to sexuality.
(Some special toy, outfit, whatever...)
That might work.
