I'm not about to embark on a multisite adventure or nothing, but I was thinking about these "media companies" that will have 4 or 5 sites all on different themes. But then I know the big company that lost Gawker bought a ton more and put them all on the same ugly theme.

That led me to think about Wordpress multisite. Has anyone used it?

I was thinking how you could (but may not want to really) put all of the sites on the same theme you made or bought. Can they all be driven off of the same set of PHP files though? So as you customize one the changes are rolled out to all of them? I think I heard that's how it works with the plugins, right?

Can the databases go on different servers once they all start seeing big traffic?

you just keep updating the theme across the board, right? sort of like how wordpress and themes work anyway. They probably all use the same CMS - look at BBC's set of sites; all consistent. I don't think these are managed inviddually, but through an immense propiertary system with a wysiwyg CMS
